F1H2O Nations Cup Singapore 2011

Fastest Powerboats in the water to compete off Singapore’s coast

Singapore, 8 November 2011 – Singapore will hear the roar of some the most powerful engines on the water as the inaugural F1H2O Nations Cup Singapore 2011 powerboats come screaming into Singapore waters. These are some of the fastest boats in the water and will be competing for the pride of their nations from 19 to 20 November at The Float@Marina Bay. This is a unique event for power boating as countries will be competing against each other and not the usual teams.

The teams will be racing on a track laid out in the Marina Bay area which will test the skills of the drivers who will be racing to get around in the quickest time. The racing will be held over two days. On the first day, the drivers will race one-on-one against each other until there are only two drivers left in the final in the match racing event. The second day sees the boats competing against the whole field in a group race. One of the most competitive aspects of the sport takes place on Friday, 18 November with the boat draw. To ensure that there is pure equality between the teams, each team picks their boat numbers out of a hat. This is done to make sure that no team makes major changes to the boat, and is to show that the best driver will win.

Ms Zalinah Jantan, Managing Director of Maxit International, the organizer of F1H2O Nations Cup Singapore 2011 said, “We are delighted to bring the F1H2O Nations Cup to Singapore this year for the inaugural round. Singaporeans have a growing love of all things motorsport and this is something very different from what they would have experienced before.  We are sure this will be an exciting competition and will leave all those watching on the edge of their seats.”

The head of Union Internationale Motonautique, the international federation authority for powerboat racing, Dr Raffaele Chiulli said, “We are excited about bringing this fantastic new series to Singapore. Singapore has a rich maritime history and we want to be associated with that. Singapore has also put themselves on the global sporting map in the last few years, people from all over the world recognize it as a venue where you can come and run a great event. We want to introduce Singaporeans to this type of water sport and racing, and hopefully they will get as excited as other countries around the world.”

For the first time ever in power boating history, there will be a team representing Singapore. The drivers are hoping to do their country proud and show their skills in this event. They will be competing against professional teams, but their team feels they should be competitive.

Mr Laurence Wong, one of the two Team Singapore pilots said, “We are very proud to be competing against the best in the world. We hope that with the equal machinery it will give us a good chance to show our skills and what we can offer. We expect to be competitive and want to give the home crowd something to cheer about.”

The event will have lots of fun-filled activates for all ages. There will be a spectacular display from the water ski performers, who will be doing some of the most exciting stunts on water in their skis. There will also be a mini carnival with stage performers to make sure that everyone is entertained for the whole day. There will also be lucky draws and the chance for five special winners to get a chance to take a drive in a powerboat with one of the pilots. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get to really feel what it takes to be a powerboat pilot.
